(1) Identify the scratch or scratches. Be sure that it is not a crack through a plastic body panel, as this will not fix the crack. Be sure to have ample lighting on the spot you will be working on.
(2) Wet sand the scratched area. Here you are trying to break down rough edges. You are not trying to remove any paint. This step should take 10 seconds per scratch. Only sand the scratch and a little bit around it.
(3) You should have a scuffed 1" or 2" area, it should feel smooth to the touch.
(4) Wipe down the scuffed area with denautured alcohol or rubbing alcohol.
(5) Shake the touch up paint vigorously. Apply the paint to the scratch. Reapply until the scratch looks level or even raised. Be sure to let dry between coats. Usually 20 minutes or so.
(7) You can now apply the polishing compound, or microgrit polish using a clean cloth.
(6) After 24 hours you should be able to wet sand the touched up area again with 1000 grit sandpaper or the like, till the area feels smooth. If it looks good when wet then you are done, if it needs more paint, repeat steps 4 and 5.
(8) Apply polish in circular motion covering the entire sanded area and beyond. This will not hurt the good areas of the body.
(9) Wipe off excess and apply automotive wax if desired. The touched up area should look clean and smooth and shiny. If it is still dull then you will need a finer grit sandpaper. Then repeat from step 6.
